Poetry From Han To Sui

Journey of Adversity

 Cao Cao (155-220)

Tr. E. C. Chang

Facing north, the Taihan Mountain is now in sight.

It is so majestic that we feel intimated by its height.

Bent and twisting, the paths are too small.

Broken wheels cannot be used any more.

How desolate when the trees rustle and sough!

How sad to hear the wind blowing from the north!

Facing me the bears, large and small, couch

On the road, the tigers and leopards howl.

Few people live in the valley below.

Falling down are the flakes of snow.

I crane my neck to heave a long sigh.

So many things keep popping up in my mind.

Why I am so down to have such depressed feeling?

It is because I am dreaming of eastbound returning.

No bridge for us to cross over the deep water!

Midway, I don't know what to do but to linger.

Adding to our confusion, we have lost our way.

At dusk, where can we find a place to stay?

The further we go, the shorter is the day.

Both horses and people are too hungry to delay.

With a bag on our shoulder, we gather the firewood.

Cut the ice to prepare for our porridge-like food.

I am reminded of the poem "East Mountain Song."

It makes me feel so sad for so long.

Return to Nature (1)

Tao Yuan Ming

Tr. E.C. Chang

I don’t sing the conventional tune since my early days.

My passion for hills and mounds has not gone away.

By mistake, I fell into the mundane net.

Thirty years have gone by not without regret.

Birds in a cage would long for the old woods.

Fish raised in a shallow pond remember the deep pool.

I have cleared the fields of wilderness at the southern side.

I feel contented returning to nature and live a simple life.

I have more than ten acres of land around my cottage,

I also have eight or nine sheds available for additional usage.

Elm and willow trees keep my cottage cool behind the eaves.

Around my front yard, there are several peach and plum trees.

In the distance, a village is dimly visible.

I can also see smoke drifting in the air too.

Deep in a village lane, dogs can be head barking.

On the mulberry trees roosters keep crowing.

Nothing in and out of my cottage disturbs my mind.

I have rooms in my dwelling that are unoccupied.

Like a man who has been in confinement for too long,

I am so happy to return and enjoy nature all around!

An Elegy for Myself: A Draft

By Tao Qian (365-406)

No life can exist without an eventual death.

Anytime we may breathe our last breadth.

Like you, I was a living man last night.

I now come to enroll as a ghost in daylight.

To which direction will my spirit spread and flee?

In an empty coffin my body resembles a withered tree.

My children scream begging me to come back alive.

My close friends touch my body and sadly cry.

I no longer know what it means by gain or loss.

Right or wrong too is beyond my consciousness.

Thousands of years will come and go.

Glory and shame will be gone also.

Yes, I do have one regret in life.

I wish I could have drunk more wine.

Farewell to My Wife

Su Wu (140-60 BC?)
Tr. E. C. Chang

We tied the wedding-knot to become a married couple.
Our love for each other is definitely unbreakable.
Let’s enjoy each other’s company this very night.
Let’s treasure our tenderly love even more at such a time.
Preoccupied with the long road to go,
I get up to see what time is it now.
The morning stars have already gone away.
Ii is time to bid you farewell without delay
I must go to the battlefield for a mission.
I am not sure if there will ever be a reunion.
Holding your hand with a long sigh,
My tears keep falling down as if I am about to die.
Enjoy the spring blossoms while you may.
Don’t forget the joy we shared in the old days,
I will of course be back if I stay alive.
My spirit will be with you in case I die.

The Short Song

Cao Cao (155-220)
Tr. E. C. Chang

In front of the wine, I sing a song.
A lifetime really is not that long.
Life is like the dew before the rising sun.
Bygone days did not bring me much fun.

Sing my heart out when my emotion overwhelms me.
Unpleasant memories keep reminding me.
How can I get rid of this anxious feeling?
Get some Dukeng wine and start drinking.

You are the talented ones in your prime.
I think of you all the time.
For you, I am willing to bow.
I event quietly chant my poem until now.

In the wilds, the deer to each other cry.
They look for food to reduce their hunger drive.
My distinguished guests will come for dinner.
I will entertain them with a flute, a drum, and a zither.

The bright moon shines all around.
But how and when can I take it down?
Dreadful thoughts come naturally.
They cannot be stopped deliberately!

You traveled through the rugged roads in your journey.
I surely appreciate your sacrifice and your company.
How joyful we are to chat and eat during our reunion?
I am grateful to you for your help on several occasions.

The moon is so bright with a few stars around.
Some crows and magpies fly southbound.
They circle around the same tree thrice.
Which branch do they perch for the night?

No mountain is too steep and tall.
No sea is too deep for my cause.
Learn from Master Zhou for valuing all talents.
Then people will come to my corner with enthusiasm.

Song of the Great Wind

Liu Bang (Han Dynasty)

tr. E. c. Chang

As the great wind rises, the clouds soar upward and fly.
I return in triumph to my native land with my head held high.
Where can I find brave men to guard my frontiers on all sides?
